- PvdL> For what it's worth, I get 33k6 connections routinely with two
- PvdL> Couriers. Never thought Dutch phonelines were so great but I sure hope
- PvdL> the modem makers keep tinkering their boxes to get some extra speed.
-
- Don't think there was any knocking against modem makers, but there was
- against spurious claims which cannot be substantiated... V34+ wouldn't
- have happened without AT&T...
-
- PvdL> V34+ and V42bis really speed up Internet access, which is what really
- PvdL> matters nowadays. Who uses BBS's in the nineties anyway?
-
- Users of off-line mail readers under QWK, Blue~Wave, and other formats.
- They (PackLink is one) can prepare mail off line ready for polling using
- an EMSI packet and back comes your traffic, compressed, ready for unpacking,
- sorting, display in your Off-line reader.
-
- No need nowadays to enter the BBS at all. A netmail addressed to the
- program (PTQwk) in this instance with commands can do all sorts of things:
-
- ADD <board> [msg#] Add msg board to combined boards.
- DROP <board> Drop msg board from combined boards.
- RESET <board> [msg#] Reset last read pointers on msg board.
- FILE <filename> File request.
- ALIAS <value> Change user alias.
- CITY <value> Change user city.
- DATA <value> Change user data phonenumber.
- VOICE <value> Change user voice phonenumber.
- PASSWORD <value> Change user password.
- FORMAT QWK/OMEN/BWAVE/ASCII Change export format.
- ARCHIVE <value> Change default archive format.
- PROTOCOL <value> Change default transfer protocol.
- MAXNUMBER <value> Change maximum message count to be packed.
- WELCOME ON/OFF Turn on or off receiving WELCOME.ANS.
- GOODBYE ON/OFF Turn on or off receiving GOODBYE.ANS.
- NEWS ON/OFF Turn on or off receiving news.
- FILES ON/OFF Turn on or off receiving new files list.
- BLTS ON/OFF Turn on or off receiving bulletins.
-
- Support BBS's are very common for that special setup or help file, to view
- product details, updates etc. Anyway, what's a WWW site but a BBS with
- interactive HTML? Just it's not a direct connect. And considering all
- the bottlenecks and slow ftp speeds being sold by ISPs these days...
